Birthday Special: Akshay Kumar and his penchant for real stories and characters
From mastering the action genre to dispelling the myth that action-heroes can’t do humour, Akshay Kumar has been a trendsetter in Bollywood. But, he has been quietly dominating one certain genre in the industry for the past few years.
When one looks closely at his discography Akshay Kumar has been heradling a lot of biopics- either directly based on the person or inspired by the journey of many related to a historical incident. On the occasion of his birthday, here’s a look at all the times Akshay Kumar essayed a real character on screen:
Although a historical incident served as the inspiration for this movie, Ranjit Katyal, the main character, was a composite of several persons who made the evacuation story a reality. Even though it’s not a straight biopic, this is the point at which Akshay Kumar went down the”true stories” route.
This differs slightly from a biopic once again in that the plot was based on actual events, however the name of the character was modified. Rustom Pavri was the name of Akshay’s role in this movie, which was based on the biography of KM Nanavati.
An identical situation to that of Rustom, true story, real character, but different name. This movie was based on Arunachalam Muruganantham’s life. When Laxmikant observes his wife Gayatri using an unsanitary cloth during her period, he becomes irritated. Then he raises awareness and develops a device that can produce affordable sanitary pads.
Akshay Kumar portrayed the part of Tapan Das in Gold, a story based on the life of the renowned Indian hockey player and coach Kishan Lal. Throughout the movie, he experiments with a variety of tones—comedy, romance, drama—and succeeds in each and every one.
Based on the Battle Of Saragarhi, Kesari does an excellent job of educating us about this heroically impossible conflict. Although playing this part was by no means simple, this powerhouse of ability makes sure to carry the entire film on his shoulders.
Samrat Prithviraj, a film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, is based on the life and bravery of King Prithviraj Chauhan. Manushi plays Sanyogita, the love of his life, while Akshay plays the title character.
The film, which also features Parineeti Chopra and is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, is largely based on the West Bengal disaster known as the Raniganj Coalfields Collapse of 1989. The brave Jaswant Singh Gill, who saved numerous miners following the collapse, is portrayed by Akshay Kumar.
The Hindi version of the Tamil film, which also won National Awards and stars Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in the key roles, is being worked on by Akshay Kumar. Sudha Kongara, who also directed the original, is directing the remake. The life of retired Army Captain GR Gopinath, the creator of the low-cost airline Air Deccan, is depicted in the film Soorarai Pottru.
