Interview: C Premkumar (‘Meiyazhagan’) | Baradwaj Rangan

I did like most of ’96. It had many good qualities and comparitively it was and is still a much better class of movie. The movie is inspired by “Fan Chan” or “My Girl”, a 2003 Thai movie directed by 6 people. 96 has a schmaltzy core but it did have a good presentation. In some places there were over actions and miscalculated reactions from the actors, in the name of simplicity. I liked “Kalloori” much better in that aspect. The rustic simplicity was much better depicted in that movie. All things said, Prem Kumar does make me look forward to “Meiyazhagan”.

I certainly wasn’t expecting “The Man from Earth” from any of the filmmakers here. It’s a terrific example of what can be achieved even with a super low budget. It’s also a pioneering example where the producers officially thanked torrent users for distributing and promoting the hell out of that movie that gave them an astounding profile. Too bad the sequel wasn’t nearly as good which stopped further sequels from being greenlit.
